Our Candidates
Mayeli Alvarez
For Park Board
Mayeli is a first-generation settler of Mexican and German descent.
Her concern for preserving a livable climate led her to UBC, where she studied Environmental Design before earning a Master of Science in Architectural Conservation from the University of Edinburgh. Maintaining and retrofitting buildings is essential to reducing a city's carbon footprint. This is the lens Mayeli will bring to her work on the park board.
An avid biker, former competitive swimmer, Leisure Access Pass holder, community centre user, and Vancouver Farmers' Market shopper, Mayeli believes that a sustainable city ensures residents can access natural environments with mature trees and healthy food. She believes that parks and recreational facilities are our greatest tools for preventative care, both mental and physical.
As a director of Protecting Our Vancouver Aquatic Centre Society, Mayeli has been a key figure in the fight for transparency and accountability in the Vancouver Aquatic Centre decision-making process, which she calls "a crash course in everything wrong with how our city is currently being run." Our democratic voices have been shut out, and misconduct in procurement processes is undermining democracy in the city we call home.
Mayeli is running with TEAM because, after a year of contending with staff-driven decisions at the City and Park Board, she values TEAM’s commitment to community involvement, protecting green spaces and access to recreational facilities.
