VANCOUVER (Dec. 20, 2025) – The 2026 FIFA World Cup is a bad deal for Vancouver. The city isn't getting value out of hosting an event that provides little for its residents at a tremendous cost. Tickets are unaffordable for most residents, and the cost projections for hosting the event are growing higher and higher.
The latest revelation of $10-million for temporary surveillance cameras around BC Place is only a small chunk of the $281-million FIFA is currently projected to cost the City of Vancouver, but nobody will be surprised to see that number increase. That's taxpayer dollars not being used for real, lasting investments for residents.
Public safety is one of the top issues facing the residents of Vancouver. TEAM for a Livable Vancouver believes much more needs to be done to improve public safety throughout the city. That means concrete, permanent solutions.
In contrast, Mayor Ken Sim has continued the approach of his predecessor Kennedy Stewart in focusing on flashy events and expensive gimmicks, rather than addressing the everyday concerns of residents and neighbourhoods.
TEAM will bring back common sense and respect for our residents and deliver real, lasting solutions to improve public safety throughout our city.
